Men and women that struggle with the urge to eat when strong feelings of emotion and stress overwhelm them into eating often feel completely out of control. This is an eating disorder that affects numerous people, and it can ultimately cause depression and numerous other health problems. When a person eats during times of stress, it can also cause the battle they fight against being overweight to be almost impossible to win. The good news is there are several different steps that can be taken that will effectively eliminate this behavior and stop emotional eating. In achieving this goal, it provides people with the ability to regain control of their food.

One of the first steps that a person should take is to change the way in which they think. In many cases when a person eats excessively when stressful or emotional situations arise, they do so in an instant reaction. This type of pattern needs to be changed and replaced with a much healthier reaction. To stop emotional eating successfully, it requires a conscious effort to change the old ways and habits formed from unhealthy thinking patterns. This can be done in many different ways. Some people have found a tremendous amount of benefit by simply reaching for word search puzzles or crossword puzzles when they feel the urge coming on to eat from stress related issues.

It is also necessary to recognize the triggers that are responsible for causing a person to eat when emotions are high. By knowing what these triggers are, a person can better avoid specific situations and circumstances that have been known to cause their impulse to eat when emotions are high. It can be very helpful for a person to know the signs that certain events are about to take place that typically cause them to experience excessive stress. When a person knows what these signs are they can form a routine of simply removing themselves from these situations before they even occur and stop emotional eating before it happens.

Taking a closer look at the list of food items that are purchased for meals and snacks is also a good idea. By removing junk foods and unhealthy snack foods from the home and no longer putting them on your grocery list, it will increase the chances of being successful in your fight to stop emotional eating. These should be replaced with foods like celery, carrot sticks, and other fruits and vegetable items. It is after all, much healthier to reach for fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in times that stress and high emotions feel as if they are overwhelming.
